Men's Volleyball Compete at Western Canadian Championships
November 30 2009
This past weekend the Thunder Men's Volleyball team headed to Saskatoon for the Western Canadian College Open Volleyball Championships hosted by Kelsey College. Friday November 27th the Thunder opened pool play against the host Kelsey but would loose heart breaking best of 3 series 18-25, 25-16, 14-16. Scott Pawluik led the team with 11 kills, and three blocks, one ace serve. Curtis Lucki also had 10 kills. The Thunder then faced played Assiniboine Community College who would defeat the Thunder in 2 straight sets, 26-27, 14-25, Andrew Odegard led the team with 7 kills this match. Saturday November 28th saw the Thunder face a familiar opponent in their pool versus the Olds College Broncos. The Thunder would open up with a 25-14 win, but lose 23-25 in the second set and fall in the third 11-15. Curtis Lucki led the team with 9 kills and 2 blocks with Matt Habitant getting 27 assists. Advancing to the playoffs Concordia would match up with St. Boniface opening the game with a strong 25-19 win, only to lose the second set 21-25 and the third 8-15.

Men's Volleyball Brings Home ACAL Bronze

This past weekend the Concordia University College of Alberta Men's Volleyball team headed to Calgary to take part in the Alberta Colleges Athletics League Provincial Championships hosted by Ambrose University College November 20th and 21st. The Thunder would face the host Ambrose Lions in the semi-final match-up on Friday November 20th. Ambrose would defeat the Thunder three straight 15-25, 16-25, 14-25 to advance to the gold medal game and have Concordia compete for the Bronze Medal on Saturday.Thunder leaders in the loss were Curtis Lucki with 6 kills and Matt Habitant with 15 assists. Saturday November 21st the Thunder found themselves facing a familiar opponent in the Portage Voyageurs for the ACAL Bronze Medal. In and exciting come from behind victory the Thunder would defeat the Voyageurs in 5 sets after losing the first two sets 23-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-12. Concordia was led statistically by Scott Pawluik with 11 kills and 2 blocks, Andrew Odegard had 10 kills and 1 block, and Matt Mchargue had 9 kills and 4 blocks. The Bronze Medal marks the end of the ACAL season for the Men's Volleyball team who also had a pair of players named to the ACAL All-Conference team Curtis Lucki and Matt McHargue. The Thunder Men's Volleyball now prepares for the Western Canadian Open Championships hosted in Saskatoon November 27th-29th
Men's Volleyball Finish Regular Season

The Thunder Men's Volleyball was on the road Saturday November 14th for the final tournament event of the 2009 ACAL Volleyball regular season hosted by Olds College. Concordia would face the powerful Ambrose Lions in their first match losing in three straight sets 16-25, 18-25, 23-25. Concordia's Scott Pawluik and Chad Vander Lugt let the team with 9 kills each. The second game of the day had the Thunder facing the host Olds Broncos in a hard fought 5 set battle that saw Concordia come up short 3-2 (16-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 11-15) the team was led by Scott Pawluik who had 14 kills and 2 blocks, along with Curtis Lucki who had 11 Kills and 2 blocks. The pair of losses dropped Concordia's record to 6-6 and put them in a three way tie for the final two playoff spots with Olds and Portage. The Thunder's overall set record of 10-7 versus the Olds and Portage would seed them 3rd in the final standings. The Thunder now prepare for the ACAL Final Four playoffs hosted by Ambrose University College in Calgary beginning Friday November 20th when the Thunder will take on the host Ambrose Lions in the semi-final round game time is set for 8:30pm.

Men's Volleyball Lose to Portage
November 9 2009
The Thunder Men's Volleyball team headed to Lac La Biche on Thursday November 5th to face the Portage Voyageurs in ACAL regular season action. The Thunder would begin strong winning the first set 25-23 however Portage would respond by defeating the Thunder 25-23 in the second. The two teams would trade victories two more times (25-22,25-18) before Concordia would fall in a decisive fifth set by a score of 15-9. The loss leaves the Thunder sitting at 6-4 and in third place in the ACAL Men's Volleyball League. Concordia now prepares for their final regular season games of the year on the road at Olds College Saturday November 14th.

Men's Volleyball Win on the Road & Split at Home
November 2 2009
The Thunder Men's Volleyball team had an action packed weekend with a Thursday October 29th road trip Lacombe to face CUC and hosting their final home event of the ACAL season Saturday October 31 in a tournament versus Olds College and Ambrose College of Calgary. Thursday October 29th the CUC Auroras forced the Thunder to five sets (25-18, 17-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-12) before Concordia could close out the win 3-2. 0. Chad Vander Lugt led the team with 17 Kills, followed by Matt Mchargue with 10 kills and 3 blocks, 3 aces. Returning home to the Ralph King Athletics Center Saturday October 31 the Thunder played host a first place Ambrose University College of Calgary and Olds College in a sanctioned ACAL event. The Thunder would split in the days action with Ambrose defeating Concordia 3-0 (25-18, 24-26 13-25) , while the Thunder would be victorious over the Olds Broncos in four games 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 28-26.) Concordia's Curtis Lucki led the Thunder with 17 kills, Matt Mchargue with 11 Kills, Andrew Odegard with 10 Kills, and Erik Osness with 10 Kills and Chad Vander Lugt also found double figures in the kill category with 10. The Thunder now are on the road Thursday November 5th as the head to Lac La Biche to take on the Portage College Voyageurs game time set for 8:30pm.

Men's Volleyball Blanked by Vikings
October 19 2009
The Concordia University College of Alberta Men's Volleyball program took to the court this past week in a battle for first place in the ACAL standings against the defending league champion Augustana Vikings. Thursday October 15th the Thunder headed to Camrose where they lost in three games posting scores of 16-25, 17-25, 16-25. "The scores reflect the number hitting and serving errors we made." said Head Coach Jason Zoeteman of the loss. Concordia's Chad Vander Lugt was named player of the game with 7 kills and 3 blocks. The Thunder returned to the Ralph King Athletic Center Saturday October 17th for the second game of the series. Once again Augustana showed why they are the defending ACAL Champions defeating Concordia in three straight games (16-25,16-25,20-25). The Thunder Matt Habitant was named the United Cycle player of the game with 20 assists and 6 digs on the night. The Thunder take to the road next as they head to Lacombe Thursday October 29th to play against Canadian University College in ACAL action, game time is set for 8:30pm.

Men's Volleyball Sweep Pilots
October 5 2009
The Thunder Men's Volleyball team was on the road this past weekend in Three Hills Alberta to take on the Prairie Bible College Pilots in ACAL regular season action. Concordia swept PBC in three straight sets jumping out early in the first set 25-10, but facing stiffer resistance in the next two sets winning 25-21 and 25-23 respectively. In his first start at setter Matt Habitant tallied 16 assists and 1 ace in two games while fellow setter Spencer Carless added 8 assists in single game. Andrew Odegard led the Thunder in kills with 5 total. The Thunder now sit atop the ACAL standings with a 4-0 record. Men's Volleyball is on the road again Thursday October 15th when they head to Camrose to take on the Augustana Vikings.

Men's Volleyball Top Aurora's 3-1

The Concordia University College of Alberta Men's Volleyball team took to the floor Thursday October 1st to face the Canadian University College Aurora's in ACAL volleyball action at the Ralph King Athletics Center. The Thunder Men struggled in the opening game with multiple errors that saw the Thunder lose the first set 25-23. However Concordia would rally and win the next three hard fought sets 25-21,25-18,25-12 to take the match 3-1. Middle Matt McHargue would lead the Thunder 13 kills 5 blocks and 1 ace while power Chad Vander Lugt 12 kills 3 blocks and 2 aces, setter Spencer Carless added 23 assists and 2 aces to the Thunder totals. Concordia is on the road this weekend as the head to Three Hills for tournament play hosted by the PBC Pilots.

Men's Volleyball Open Season with a Bang

This past weekend marked a historic event as the Thunder Men's Volleyball team took to the court for their inaugural regular season games, Saturday September 26th travelling to Camrose to take on Prairie Bible College and returning home Sunday September 27th to face Portage College. Saturday the Thunder defeated the PBC Pilots in three straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-14, 25-13. Setter Mike Gordulic recorded15 assists and 1 sevice ace in the win while offensively the Thunder were led by Curtis Lucki with 11 kills hitting 38% on the day. "The Team showed what kind of offensive threat they can be today" said Head Coach Jason Zoeteman about the win. Sunday September 27th the Thunder played their home opener against Portage College at the Ralph King Athletic Center. Concordia would win the game in three straight sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-18). Thunder Setter Spencer Carless would record 23 assists in the win on his way to being named the United Cycle Player of the Game. The Thunder now prepare to face Canadian University College Thursday October 1st at the Ralph King Athletic Center, game time is set for 8:30pm.

Men's Volleyball in Exhibition Action
September 21 2009
Friday September 18th the Thunder Men's Volleyball team travelled to Camrose AB to face the defending ACAL champions the Augustana Vikings in exhibition play. Over the course of five games the Thunder would lose each set by a scores of; 16-25, 17-25, 23-25, 9-15. However Head Coach Jason Zoeteman had a positive outlook on the result saying "If we had cut down on our errors we would have been right there or even won a game or two" he continued to say "we showed strong potential and had some great plays but need to improve our passing and defence" Concordia opens the ACAL regular season Saturday September 26th at Augustana then returns home Sunday September 27th for the home opener against Portage College with the women's game starting at 1:00pm and Men at 3:00pm
Thunder Athletics Names Men's Volleyball Coach

Concordia University College of Alberta is excited to announce Jason Zoeteman as the Head Coach of the Thunder Men’s Volleyball program. Coach Zoeteman brings extensive experience from south of the boarder to Concordia’s new Volleyball program having served as the Women’s Volleyball Head Coach at Solano Community College a signatory of the California Community College Athletics Association as well as Head Coach at Lewis and Clarke State of the NAIA. Coach Zoeteman’s experience with program building and high level competition will serve the Thunder well as they embark on the inaugural season in ACAL Volleyball this fall. “We are excited to see where Coach Zoeteman can guide our new program and have confidence that his experience will benefit our athletes and our institution,” says Athletics Coordinator Todd Warnick. Thunder Athletics to Add Volleyball for 2009-2010

The Concordia University College of Alberta Athletics department is excited to announce the addition of both Men’s and Women’s Volleyball programs to the Thunder Athletics family. Thunder Volleyball will begin its inaugural season in the fall of 2009 competing in the Alberta Colleges Athletic League (ACAL) with Olds College, Keyano College, and Augustana among the other members of the league, with the intent to apply to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) shortly afterward. “Volleyball is long overdue as part of the CUCA athletic offerings as we have had many inquiries about volleyball over the years”, says Concordia Athletic Director Bernie Masterson. Mr. Masterson goes on to say “With the support of senior administration and the student body, it is hoped that within a short period of time, Thunder Volleyball will develop into a highly competitive, high profile sport in the tradition of Concordia Athletics” The Athletics Department hopes to have coaches hired by late spring.
